Read the Caraval Trilogy first- Before you read this book, I advise you to read the Caraval trilogy. Maybe no one can remember it because the ending hasnt happened yet? Its all very exciting. I think the Archer and The Fox fairytale mentioned (the one where no-one can remember the ending) will be Jacks and Evies story. Lots of mentioning of sweet treats, magic and happily ever afters.

You will also like it if you like historical fiction as it has a historic fairytale feel to it. Its magical- I love fairytale backdrops to stories and this honestly feels magical. Also I am glad we do not get his POV because it helps keep him a mystery.

Jacks is actually a cold anti-hero/villain-I like that the MMC in this book is actually cold hearted and doesnt magically have a soft spot for out FMC. So if you are a romance fan, give this a chance. The theme of this story is love, heartbreak and romance and this is explored in various forms. I feel alot of the time in YA, there is a lacklustre plot that alot of readers do not care about, as they want to see the romance. They don't suddenly start to like each other just because they are the MCs, we actually see them warm up to each other after they save each other.įocus on love and romance- I like that the main theme of the story is love and romance. They do not immediately become each others exception which was a nice change from what I usually read in both romance and YA. MCs are likable and do not like each other straight away- Jacks is a cold invidiual and is getting over his heartbreak from Caraval and Evie is in love with another guy. I feel Jacks and Evie's story is more like Dante and Tella's.

I liked the sequel books of the Caraval Trilogy, Legendary and Finale, (Dante and Tella's story) more than Caraval. So I read the Caraval Trilogy and I have been waiting for Once Upon A Broken Heart since it was announced. There is alot of potential in this series if the world is explored more, but the first book, on its own, seems to leave alot unanswered and leaves the reader unsatisifed. A good introduction to likeable MCs, interesting side characters and a magicial feeling of escapism. I posted this on r/romancebooks but it seems more appropriate here.
